System description

The XPLORER-NS measures Nitrogen and Sulfur simultaneously. Valuable information about a sample that contains both elements is created during a single run. With its low detection limit it is possible to measure concentrations at ppb level. Detection through Chemiluminescence and UV-Fluorescence with sample combustion at high temperature are the reference methods for the determination of Total Nitrogen and Total Sulfur. Separate analysis of Total Nitrogen or Total Sulfur can be done with the XPLORER-N or XPLORER-S.

Oil refineries produce a wide range of air and water emissions that can be harmful to the environment. Some of the contaminants are present in the original crude oil, while others are a result of refinery processes and operations. Air emissions include sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which have to be monitored.

During the production process of oil products, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are formed in the gases of the furnaces, which are corrosive to steel. In addition, during catalyst reforming, naphtha is pretreated to remove contaminants like chlorine, sulphur and nitrogen which could poison the catalyst. Right before the end-product is sent to blending and storage, the oil product is treated once more to remove the last amounts of nitrogen and sulphur completely.

Refineries need to monitor and control the total nitrogen and total sulfur content in the feedstock. This is the only way to tune their processes at the highest level of efficiency and also important in order to protect the quality of fuels which leads to a cleaner environment

System description

The AOX, EOX and POX modules are easily interchangeable.
High throughput AOX analysis is enabled by a unique slider principle, the XPLORER simply utilizes Newton’s law of gravity, by allowing the cup or frit to 'fall' into the boat, before entering the horizontal furnace.
When the boat returns from the furnace, the slider moves to the eject position, where the 'burned' cup or frit is collected for re-use, without any pile-up in the furnace tube.

Besides full control over sample combustion, the XPREP C-IC not only collects the oxidized gas stream, but also automatically transfers a fraction of the absorbance solution to any renowned IC system. The ideal solution to cover the increasing demand for analysis of corrosive halogens (Fluor, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine) and sulfur compounds (e.g. Sulfate, Sulfite, Thiosulfate) in different matrices. These analytes need to be monitored because they are corrosive, poison catalysts, damage industrial equipment, and are harmful to the environment.

TE Instruments developed a fully automated, extremely compact sample preparation system covering the oxidative pyrohydrolytic combustion, fraction collection, and sample injection towards the IC. The XPREP C-IC can introduce samples both via optimized direct injection (liquids module) and conventional boat-inlet (boat module) into a horizontal furnace. This automated sample-prep solution reduces complexity of sample transfer and significantly improves user convenience.

XPREP C-IC is the only combustion system capable of introducing samples for combustion both via direct injection (liquids module) and boat-inlet (boat module) into a horizontal furnace. Introduction of low boiling liquid samples by direct injection has multiple benefits compared to boat-inlet.

Background

Sulfur dioxide is a chemical compound that is created in various industrial processes. Petroleum often contains sulphur compounds, and their combustion causes sulfur dioxide (SO2). Further oxidation of SO2, generally accompanied by a catalyst such as NO2, forms H2SO4; acid rain. This is one of the reasons that fuels are monitored regarding their environmental impact. For example: In Europe, the maximum allowed amount of sulfur in diesel has been set at 10 ppm.

Background

Nitrogen plays an important role in the manufacturing of chemicals and petrochemicals. The nitrogen content in fuels is getting a lot of attention nowadays in order to protect the environment. Nitrogen dioxide is a chemical compound that is emitted by high temperature combustion, and is known as one of the most abundant air pollutants. Emissions of NO2 are therefore subject to strict policies in order to protect the environment. In products made out of plastic, nitrogen is also used as an additive.

The amount of nitrogen in fuels does not only pollute the environment (NO2), but also the catalysts which are used during the production processes of refineries. It is corrosive to steel and poisons the catalysts. This contamination could slow down these production processes and thus influence the level of efficiency
