Improved design from the inside out

The analysis process starts with weighing sample into a boat and then running it through thermal decomposition under air or oxygen flow. All mercury and residual combustion products then flow into the catalyst section. Here, interferences are removed and the mercury species are reduced and trapped on a gold amalgamator with subsequent release into multiple measuring cells positioned along the spectrophotometer's optical path. The DMA-80 evo double beam dramatically reduces the signal to noise ratio, which greatly improves the quantification limit, enabling accurate and precise mercury determination even at the ppt level. This increased signal stability improves the reproducibility and reliability of analysis even at low concentrations.

Accurate Results

The DMA-1 achieves a detection limit as low as 0,003 nanograms of mercury and is capable of measuring up to 1.500 nanograms of mercury, equivalent to a concentration of 15 mg/kg (15 ppm) on a 100 mg sample analysis.

Sample matrix

The DMA-1 produces matrixindependent results. The instrument is calibrated using aqueous standards and then analyzes organic and inorganic solid samples. Just one method is used to analyze a variety of different matrices making the DMA-1 extremely easy to use.

Pecision and Stability

The DMA-1 provides reproducible results over a broad range of samples, such as polymers, food and feed, and oils, for instance.
The instrument calibration lasts for months of operation, and the results are stable over time.

Memory Effect

The DMA-1 does not virtually suffer from any memory effect. The instrument software features the ‘Autoblank’ function, by which the user preset a satisfactory blank level. If that level is exceed the instrument automatically runs blank cycles until the expected level is reached. This is important when analyzing a series of unknown samples.

Sample Amount

Up to 1,5 grams of solid or 1,5 mL of liquids can be analyzed. This is particularly important for the analysis of heterogeneous materials or for samples with a very low mercury concentration.

Easy-to-Use Technology

The DMA-1 is operated via a compact control terminal with easy-to- read, bright, full-color, touch screen display or, alternatively, by a Windows-based computer. The terminal is provided with multiple USB and RS-232 ports for direct printouts of methods and runs, and for interfacing the instrument to an external balance.

The terminal runs Milestone’s unique EasyCONTROL software, providing simple and intuitive, but extremely flexible and powerful control over the analytical process. All sample parameters, including furnace temperatures, method profiles, absorbance signals, results, and calibrations are saved.

The DigiBlock heating surface is made of graphite or aluminum alloy protected by PTFE coating and can accommodate as many as 54 graduated tubes and operates from room temperature up to 450°C. The DigiBlock complies with the highest international standards to perform EPA approved methods. The DigiBlock use low cost, disposable digestion tubes to speed up. Quality, productivity and efficiency in metal sample prep

Digestion in labs has many faces. One of the most common is digestion of metals. Sample preparation is also widespread. Procedures take approximately 85% of the time associated with atomic spectroscopy analysis, where quality of the sample, ease of use and speed are key factors. An excellent solution to accomplish both tasks is the 8-unit strong LabTech DigiBlock line. 4 out of the eight models are “ITOUCH” versions that are supplied along with a practical controller (connected to the main unit via a 2-meter long cable) that can be mounted on any metallic surface (e.g. outside a laminar flow) that allows to control the entire sample digestion process. Acid digestion of organic samples produces gaseous by products that affect closed digestion vessels. Samples of several grams are needed in a variety of applications to have a more representative portion of large sample bulk or to compensate limitations in the sensitivity of analytical instruments. The LabTech DigiBlock digestion line allows rapid open digestions up to 54 organic samples with dry weight of several grams each. The DigiBlock accept low cost, disposable digestion tubes to speed up and simplify the digestion process. Different sizes and disposable tubes are available to meet any laboratory need. The max temperature of 450°C in combination with graphite allows to cover countless of applications.

 

iTOUCH VERSION

Include a practical controller (connected to the main unit via a 2-meter long cable) that can be mounted on any metallic surface (eg to the side of a fume hood) thanks to built-in magnets that allows to control the entire sample digestion process.

Regulating bodies all over the world have set challenging low levels of allowed Sulfur and Nitrogen concentrations in organic fuels for the present and near future in order to protect the environment.

Oil refineries produce a wide range of air and water emissions that can be harmful to the environment. Some of the contaminants are present in the original crude oil, while others are a result of refinery processes and operations. Air emissions include sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which have to be monitored.

During the production process of oil products, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are formed in the gases of the furnaces, which are corrosive to steel. In addition, during catalyst reforming, naphtha is pretreated to remove contaminants like chlorine, sulphur and nitrogen which could poison the catalyst. Right before the end-product is sent to blending and storage, the oil product is treated once more to remove the last amounts of nitrogen and sulphur completely.

Refineries need to monitor and control the total nitrogen and total sulfur content in the feedstock. This is the only way to tune their processes at the highest level of efficiency and also important in order to protect the quality of fuels which leads to a cleaner environment

Background

Sulfur dioxide is a chemical compound that is created in various industrial processes. Petroleum often contains sulphur compounds, and their combustion causes sulfur dioxide (SO2). Further oxidation of SO2, generally accompanied by a catalyst such as NO2, forms H2SO4; acid rain. This is one of the reasons that fuels are monitored regarding their environmental impact. For example: In Europe, the maximum allowed amount of sulfur in diesel has been set at 10 ppm.

Background

Nitrogen plays an important role in the manufacturing of chemicals and petrochemicals. The nitrogen content in fuels is getting a lot of attention nowadays in order to protect the environment. Nitrogen dioxide is a chemical compound that is emitted by high temperature combustion, and is known as one of the most abundant air pollutants. Emissions of NO2 are therefore subject to strict policies in order to protect the environment. In products made out of plastic, nitrogen is also used as an additive.

The amount of nitrogen in fuels does not only pollute the environment (NO2), but also the catalysts which are used during the production processes of refineries. It is corrosive to steel and poisons the catalysts. This contamination could slow down these production processes and thus influence the level of efficiency

System Description

They occur during the essential refinement process during the manufacture of oils. In 2016, research results from animal tests induced the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to decrease the recommended uptake of 3-MCPD from 2 µg to 0.8 µg per kilogram body weight. 2-MCPD is suspected to be harmful as well; the bad impact of glycidol was already verified. The most frequently occurring form of these compounds, the esters, are not carcinogenic. If the compounds are hydrolyzed into their free forms, e.g. by heat or during the process of digestion, they are presumed to be potentially toxic.

Their carcinogenicity make efficient analytics necessary. Thus, their increased content in foodstuff has to be determined fast and reliably. Axel Semrau has developed a specific workstation - the CHRONECT Workstation MCPD - which automates the entire manually time-consuming sample preparation and online analytics. Axel Semrau optimized with DGF Fast & Clean the recommended method AOCS Cd 29c-13. Clean samples and fast analytics are ensured.

Application:
According to the DGF (German Society for Fat Science) specifications (AOCS Cd 29c-13), there is an indirect method for the determination of the occurring esters from 2-MCPD, 3-MCPD and glycidol. The method includes transesterification of MCPD and glycidyl esters, the extraction of the emerging free MCPD and subsequent derivatization.

By this application, Axel Semrau has automated all steps within the method. A CTC PAL3 DHR RSI/RTC autosampler (160 cm) has been mounted onto an Bruker EVOQ GC-TQ with 456-GC. Numerous modules allow a full automation of the sample preparation. The preparation is coupled online to the GC-MS system. The operator only weighs in the sample and prepares aliquots of sodium sulfate; all subsequent steps are performed by the application.

The entire system is controlled by the user-friendly software platform CHRONOS. Subsequently, the systems' productivity is optimized and online validation of data is enabled.
